Habits can either be good or bad. And if the habit that you have built is a good one — such as sleeping early at night or reading a new book everyday — then there is no need to get rid of it. However, if the habit that you have built is a bad one, such as procrastinating and smoking or drinking heavily, it makes sense to try to get rid of it. When a bad habit gets hold of your daily lifestyle, it can be detrimental to your long-term goals in life.
Whether you want to accept it or not, habits are part of our daily life. Some are harmless, such as nail biting and head scratching — but some habits such as smoking and drinking —- can affect your overall health too. If you are starting to get serious about getting rid of these bad habits, you first have to find the root of the problem. If you don’t start with the root of the problem, you will only find these habits returning over and over again.
CHANGING BAD HABITS STARTS WITH ACCEPTANCE
To get rid of a bad habit, you first need to accept that IT EXISTS. Some people get too caught up in the “denial” stage that they are not able to move on into the “acceptance” stage — after which comes a stage that will push them towards doing the necessary actions in order to get rid of their bad habits. Without acceptance, you will never get rid of your bad habits. This is the real reason why people find their bad habits returning after a few weeks, days or months — they haven’t completely accepted that they have a bad habit right from the very start and this stops them from totally removing these habits from their lives.
To start getting rid of your bad habits, you must first accept within yourself that this bad habit exists. Only after this will you be able to start moving on to fixing the situation.
