Our emotions are one the most pressing and important traits that makes us human, and it can drive both pain and happiness in our lives. We are driven daily by our emotions — we laugh because we are happy, we cry because we’ve been hurt and we make sacrifices because we love. Without a shred of doubt, emotions control a big part of dictate our thoughts, consciousness, intentions and actions. This is the reason why we need to learn to control emotions and not let it get the best of us.

Our feelings and emotions can move into dangerous extremes. Move far to the left too much and you can suffer from unsolicited anger and rage. By counting one to ten before making any action (or reaction), you are giving yourself a chance to assess the situation before doing or saying anything that you might regret in the future. You might think that this is just a small thing – but I cannot stress enough how many times counting to ten has allowed me to control my emotions.

Divert yourself from the feelings that you are currently experiencing and just focus on repeating the numbers in your head, slowly breathing while going through the process. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. By the time you get to the last number, your emotions could have gotten down a little bit. This powerful habit, just like meditation and self-hypnosis, is something that you can practice to keep your emotions in check!
